Mark Rothko in Paris

Mark Rothko in Paris

Until 2 April, the first retrospective devoted to Mark Rothko can be viewed at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, France.

The retrospective, curated by Suzanne Pagè and Christopher Rothko, brings together 115 works from major international institutions, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, the Tate in London and the Phillips Collection in Washington DC, and from private collections, including the artist's own private collection.

The exhibition traces the artist's entire artistic career, from his early figurative paintings to his quest for abstract expressionism. Rothko's research was personal, as compared to his contemporaries he was the most contemplative exponent, his so-called colour field painting is a real constraint of experience for the viewer who observes it, the artist said about the person/work dialogue:

"The fact that a large number of people are deeply troubled and cry in front of my paintings shows that I can get in touch with those basic human emotions."
